44 Photos of Israel & Jordan

The children were laughing loudly and we could hear their cheers echoing down this ancient walkway. They smiled and gave one another bunny ears while looking into the camera. One of their friends came running down the steps toward them, wearing a Micky Mouse sweater drinking a can of Sprite. Everything around us, the buildings and streets, were made of stone. We could smell falafel frying nearby. On this day, everyone was at peace. These children were happily playing as their parents sold trinkets or food from their shops. I was in Jerusalem now. I had been in Israel for a week and would soon head to Jordan. I wanted to see for myself what these countries were all about. Here are 44 photos of Israel & Jordan.

Tel Aviv, Israel

A massive wrap from Falafel Hakosem, which translates to The Falafel Magician.

Political propaganda and messages are not uncommon here. These are apparently Israeli political figures which were placed on a park bench in the center of the city. The sign behind reads “Hello from the other side”.

My first shakshuka in Israel. A famous local dish of tomatoes, garlic, onion and egg.

Political graffiti with a message that translates to “Nothing”

Haifa

Photos of Israel & Jordan
The Bahai Gardens in Haifa, Israel. The Bahai religion teaches peace and tolerance of all religions. They had no desire to build a church in Haifa and built these gardens as a symbol of peace instead. Haifa is known throughout Israel as a symbol of tolerance and peace, where many people and religions are able to co-exist without violence.

At one of the most famous sandwich shops in Haifa I made friends with the owner. She’s been putting out great sandwiches for 40+ years.

Hummus is another one of the most important foods in Israel. In Haifa, some say it may even be one of the reasons they’ve been able to establish and maintain peace for so long.

Learning about Haifa’s culture of coexistence with my friend Fadi. It was a great discussion (and great hummus!)

Nazareth

Photos of Israel & Jordan
A myriad of cultures in the city of Nazareth: A giant Christmas tree, a popcorn and balloon-selling Santa texting on his phone, Palestinian children eating shawarma inside an Ottoman-style building and an Orthodox church in the background.

Eating lunch at Falafel Wisam Jabali. Wisam was kind enough to take this photo next to his shop. We talked about his family’s business of making falafel for generations.

Looking out over Nazareth at night from local graveyard that’s been used for centuries.

Tiberius & Sea of Galilee

Eating lunch at Falafel Orit in Tiberias. The owner is so famous she had photos on the wall with politicians, actors and rock stars.

The Western Wall, also known as the Wailing Wall or Kotel, is perhaps the most iconic image of Jerusalem.

On Christmas morning Elin and I were invited to go 4-wheeling through the desert with a dozen Saudis who were staying in our Bedouin camp. We stopped every few hours to enjoy tea and preserved dates and other snacks with them. They were very generous and hospitable to us. It was a memorable day.

Amman & Ancient Roman Ruins of Jerash

Outside the city of Amman, lies the ancient Roman city of Jerash. They rival much of what remains in Rome.

, was that if they had no one would have had enough oil. Hmmm. He also said that they didn’t need help, exactly, they were simply unprepared because they had been careless and doing other things than getting ready, and the wise ones didn’t refuse them something they needed, they just told them to go buy their oil, which they did. But it was too late. Sometimes, it really is too late. That is not a message our culture likes to hear; maybe no culture likes to hear it.

My husband and I just returned from the area (Turkey and Greece also). Your photos are wonderful and I was immediately transported back! Thank you!

You were smart to go in the off season – we arrived May 12th and it was already quite hot! We, too, found the people to be delightful. I would encourage people to go with the advice to meet people from all types of cultures. It will help to see and perhaps to understand the complex nature of life in that part of the world.

      Sharli,

That’s great to hear you had a chance to visit all of those countries. I’m glad you had a chance to meet the locals and found them to be delightful.

Thank you for the kind words and for letting me know what you thought. If you’d like to check out any more photos, I recently posted some 51 Photos of Europe from the 6 months I spent there as well, including Greece and Turkey. Cheers!
